Othello

Every once in a while you get to play the Utility roles. In this case, furious Brabantio – Father of Desdemona (“Kevin” of the Renaissance), Lovesick for Cassio (my choice) 2nd Gentleman, and WTF is happening Brabantio’s younger sibling, Gratiano in Act V (possibly non-binary, since he just came out as me in rehearsal).

I love these roles. Yes we are exposition, for the most part. Necessary, and could possibly run the risk of being forgettable… which is the glorious challenge, isn’t it?

But we as Utility are also support for our colleagues carrying the story. Being in the room with these folks -all of whom I’ve known for years – has been a salve in such a trying time in the world. (Funny enough, it’s so relevant right now.) It was a shortened rehearsal period for such a beast, but we kept our professionalism… and our senses of humor at an all time high. I think we came out just fine.

Side note, Othello was somehow much more challenging to memorize – and it also, in my opinion, contains some of the most beautiful language in the cannon.
